100 Million Trees Project

The 100 Million Trees Project is a national not-for-profit initiative being run by Richard, David and Tina Mulcahy.

The project aims to plant 100 million Native Irish trees across the island of Ireland over the next decade, to increase the native Irish tree population, to add to the biodiversity throughout the country and to help mitigate carbon dioxide output in Ireland.

The project’s ambitious aim will be to densely plant up to 2,500 native Irish trees per Mini Forest in ¼ acre sites using ‘the Miyawaki method’. Named after Japanese Botanist, Professor Akira Miyawaki, who developed the technique in the 1970s to restore degraded land, the Miyawaki Method of overplanting trees has been used in over 3,000 mini forests worldwide.

Planting excess trees together creates more rapid growth, greatly increased density, enhancing biodiversity significantly and importantly, facilitates a very rapid carbon sink. The Miyawaki approach requires much smaller planting areas and can be carried out on unused or fallow land across Ireland.

Proud sponsors for 2024 -2025

Uniphar continue to sponsor the 100 Million Trees Project for the 2024/25 planting season.

get involved in the project

If you would like to be involved in the project, and if you have a suitable ¼ acre site and wish to have a mini forest we will donate the trees and plant the mini forest Free of Charge – all you have to do is either filling the form here or contact us here.

In 2022-2023

18 sites 20,400 Irish native trees were planted in 6 counties on the island of Ireland.

In 2023-2024

a further 80 sites 201,840 Irish native trees were planted in 27 counties.

In 2024-2025

a further 163 sites 490.905 Irish native trees were planted in 19 counties.

how we do this

The Miyawaki method

The project will require an estimated 10,000 acres of land from as little as .01 of an acre to .25 of an acre from amongst Ireland’s entire stock of 20.8 million acres and because the areas required for planting are small – covering approximately between one and two basketball courts – areas of native forest can also be planted on portions of dormant Council land, Corporate sites and farmland.

The organisers behind The 100 Million Trees Project team point out that offering areas of unused land from within in local communities, landowners, councils or farms, is a relatively small price to pay in exchange for the dividend that comes in return – a carbon sequestration equivalent of 1,184,625 tonnes of CO2 every year.
