Planting the Seeds of Change:

Our Collaboration with President Michael D. Higgins

We at the 100 Million Trees Project are thrilled to share an incredible milestone in our journey towards a greener Ireland. On November 22, 2024, we partnered with President Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins to plant a 2,000-tree native-variety mini forest on the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin.

This special event symbolises a shared commitment to combating climate change, restoring biodiversity, and fostering sustainability made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of  AIB & Uniphar

A Vision for a Greener Ireland

Since launching our project in 2022, we have planted over 220,000 trees across Ireland, working hand-in-hand with volunteers, sponsors, and community members. This year alone, our goal is to plant an additional 550,000 native trees at 230 sites in 19 counties. The mini forest at Áras an Uachtaráin is a proud highlight of this effort, underscoring the importance of collective action in safeguarding our planet.

President Higgins’ powerful words during the planting event resonate deeply with us:

“The planting of trees is of vital importance in combatting climate change and helping to restore the essential biodiversity which is needed to sustain our planet. I am delighted that this new mini forest has been planted in Áras an Uachtaráin, which joins a significant number of sustainability measures which we continue to take on the grounds.”

Gratitude for Support

We are deeply grateful to President and Sabina Higgins for their generous support of our mission. The event was not just about planting trees; it was a celebration of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, professional partners, sponsors, and communities.

As our co-founder, Richard Mulcahy, said:

“We have caught the public imagination, and our success to date comes down to the dedication of our volunteers, our fantastic sponsors, our professional partners, and all those communities and individuals who have come forward and offered planting sites throughout the country.”

A Shared Commitment to Sustainability

The mini forest at Áras an Uachtaráin reflects the President’s broader commitment to sustainability. In 2019, a biodiversity audit of the grounds led to the introduction of Dexter cattle for natural grassland management and award-winning honey production. We are proud to contribute to this growing legacy of environmental stewardship.
