We were delighted to join the team on Ireland AM on 17 April 2026 to talk about the progress of the 100 Million Trees Project — and to celebrate an incredible milestone.
After three years of planting, community support, and partnership with landowners across the country, we have officially planted our first 1 million native trees across Ireland.
From a Simple Idea to a National Movement
The project began with a simple but ambitious idea:
If Ireland is facing a climate and biodiversity crisis, then we need big solutions.
Founder Richard Mulcahy launched the initiative with his brother David and sister Tina to give people a practical way to take action.
Ireland has:
- 450,000 homes with gardens of half an acre or more
- 137,000 farmers with land across the country
- Vast potential to restore native woodland
By working together, we can plant 100 million native trees and rebuild biodiversity across Ireland.
A Major Milestone: 1 Million Trees Planted
So far, we have planted trees in:
- 340 locations
- 30 counties across Ireland
Each planting site contributes to creating dense native mini-forests, providing habitats for birds, insects, and wildlife while helping absorb carbon.
The response from communities, landowners, and volunteers has been extraordinary.
People aren’t just planting trees — they’re planting a legacy for future generations.
The Miyawaki Method: Small Space, Big Impact
We use the Miyawaki Method, a technique developed in Japan that creates fast-growing native forests.
A typical planting site:
- Uses ¼ acre of land
- Plants 2,500 native trees
- Creates a dense woodland ecosystem
- Reaches around 10 feet in height within three years
These micro-forests dramatically increase biodiversity and provide habitats for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
How People Can Get Involved
There are two simple ways to support the project:
🌱 Offer Land
If you have suitable land — even a small corner of a field or garden — you can apply here 100milliontreesproject.ie/sites
🌳 Sponsor Trees
Corporate and community sponsorship is vital to scaling the project.
Each tree costs approximately €1.20 to grow and plant, meaning large-scale impact requires strong partnership support.

The Road Ahead
While reaching 1 million trees is a huge achievement, it is only the beginning.
Our next step is scaling the project so we can continue planting millions more trees across Ireland.
With the right support from businesses, communities, and policymakers, we can create one of the largest native reforestation efforts in Europe.
Together, we can restore biodiversity, capture carbon, and build a greener future for Ireland.
